If you google the words 'cloured powder photography' you will come up with alot of gorgeous photos of dogs flying through the air with brilliant powder bursting from their haunches. It is simply stunning imagery and so inspiring. So much so that I recently decided to jump on an opportunity to learn about this new way to capture some amazing dog portraits. On February 27, 2022, I joined a hand-full of other photographers for an in depth masterclass on the topic delivered by Jess Bell. Her images went viral back in 2019 and she has never looked back. In 2022 she even shot a session that was going to be used to 'wrap' the owners van! I mean how awesome is that?
So I excitedly joined the masterclass early on the 27th ( it was 7 am PST) with my coffee, notebook and so much excitement to find out all the details. I was not at all disappointed. Jess, spoke about how she came to this point in her career, safety of the dog, powder placement, how to organize sessions.. they are not easy.. what you need and finally how to finish an image. I was blown away.
I have said quite often that we need to be continually learning from others that there is always something new to learn and I certainly learned alot. As soon as the course was over 4 hours later, I had already landed on a model, and ordered the powder (ensuring that it is non toxic of course) now the last piece of the puzzle is to land on a location. So having said all this watch out - because I will be adding this amazing style as an add on to sessions.
Right now, if you have read this and know anyone who maybe able to help I am looking for a barn or covered space that preferrably is sand vs grass or concrete ( it makes clean up easier) to rent for a few hours to shoot some tests and models. SO.. if you know anyone that has something that fits the bill.. please let me know.
Specs needed:
60' square space or larger
Sand Floor
Sheltered from weather
can rent for up t o4 hours.
Finally below are a few of Jess Bell's images as inspiration.. OH and my official certification badge of passing the masterclass. :)
